Final Blog

In JOUR 2 I learned that how much keeping to date with current topics is important in journalism. When I first started the class, I had believed that I didn't need to be up to date with topics I was uninterested in to write a good paper or understand a news topic. Over the quarter, I have been more attentive to what is popular on the news and although I don't agree with everything reported, i saw how a lot of topic related with each other and could give you more information, background or a better understanding. I learned much more about the First Amendment and how much it impacts the laws of journalism. I learned that even though a journalist may be allowed to report a topic it doesn't mean they won't face repercussions or consequences for it.

Here is a news segment on James Risen who is facing jail time for not revealing his source about a government mishap he wrote about in one of his books. It was not a crime to write about the story but the government is angry it was released and wants to charge the CIA agent who leaked it. James's refusal to testify against his source is going on trial and may result in jail time.

Blog #8 Media law

James Risen

New York Times Investigative Journalist

James Risen goes to trial in January for fighting a subpoena ordering him to testify against a former CIA agent who allegedly leaked the information he used in his book "State of War" published in 2006. Risen may face prison for refusing to reveal his source for a story in the book about a botched CIA operation called Merlin, intended to sabotage Iran's nuclear weapons program.

During an interview on Fresh Air James Risen gave a very admirable answer to a very serious question.

Terry Gross: Have you allowed yourself to imagine what it might be like if you are sent to prison, if you do lose this case?

“It kind of made me nervous, but it doesn't anymore. You know, I know that - I know where I stand and what I want to do, and so I don't have to question that anymore”
-James Risen

blog #7 Annotated Bibliography

Stack, S. (2003). Media coverage as a risk factor in suicide. Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, 238-240. Retrieved from http://jech.bmj.com/content/57/4/238.full.pdf+html This article is contributing to my research paper by giving information about celebrity suicides and the effects of reporting them. Apart of my paper is how reporting on a suicide gives the deceased person “celebrity status”. So, I also want to write about how suicides increase after a front page suicide story with a common person compared to a celebrity.

Stylianou, G. (2012). Coroner, Media 'increasing risk' The Press, August 21. Retrieved from http://ezproxy.fhda.edu:2352/src/detail?vid=7&sid=ae006e45-e761-4de4-8f14-bd0ed105da4e@sessionmgr4004&hid=4114&bdata=JnNpdGU9c3JjLWxpdmU=#db=n5h&AN=CPL120921A007157708058-CR This article goes into the subjuset of how receptive stories about a suicide gives the deceased person a “celebrity status” and how this follows in suicides using the same method. The author talks about how some people call for more “open” reporting because it brings attention to a public health problem. This argument doesn't have much support and brings about questions on the way suicide should be reported and possible limitations on the details of a suicide.

Cheng, A., Hawton, K., Lee, C., & Chen, T. (2007). The influence of media reporting of the suicide of a celebrity on suicide rates: A population-based study. International Journal of Epidemiology, 1229-1234. This article covers the topics i have already talked about but while the others talk about specific situations, this article gives a large volume of number and percentages to prove the media’s impact on the public when suicides are reported. This journal is

made up of 293 findings from 42 studies on the media publicizing suicides and   real world consequences.

Blog #6 Propaganda

Bandwagon

Join The Crowd

This commercial depicts the product as "the winning side" and everyone is happy once they switched from the ridiculously exaggerated home remedies to the simple and easy Epiduo. The teens in the ad who are using home remedies are weird and miserable while the teens who have switched to Epiduo are funny and charismatic.

Common Man

In this video, Obama and his daughters are out buying books seemingly as a normal family would do. They say they do it annually as a family thing. Obama and his daughters are actually out to promote an event called "Small Business Saturday". This obviously would bring a lot of attention and publicity to the cause and bookstore and move people to want to shop at the same bookstore Obama is said to be attending that day in hopes of meeting him or catching a glimpse or pictures.

Blog #4 Audio

Good memories anthem of 2013-2014

Sweater Weather by The Neighborhood

Im 100% one of those "how could you possibly expect me to choose one favorite song" type of people.BUT when I think of 2013-2014 theme song i think of my best friends and I rolling to the beach, or late night sushi, the "getting ready" song and sun-bathing jam. My girls and I have probably listed to this song 100 times together in the past year.

All Time Go-To Jam

If I Could Read Your Mind by Gordon Lightfoot

The only song that will be on my favorites list every year for the rest of my life. It was one of my Dad's favorites and "our song" for as long as I can remember. When he passed away 2 years ago I got a tattoo with the lyrics and a depiction of him and the song on my leg. Its about a 1 foot by 5 in tattoo so theres a little favoritism commitment in there.
